BELGRADE – One of the world’s best selling bends (75 million records to date), American punk-rock band, Green Day, has held a concert on Monday night in the Lower Town on Kalemegdan, their first concert in Belgrade in front of around 10 – 12,000 people, reported Serbian daily “Blic”.
The band came to Serbia as part of its world tour “99 revolutions”, organized as support to their trilogy “Uno”, “Dos”, “Tre”, released at the end of the last year. When, just before 22 h was heard Green Day cover of the Ramons song “Blitzkrieg Bop”, and pink rabbit got on the stage, the audience stirred.
Then on the stage stepped the trio: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals and guitar), Mike Dimt (bassist and backing vocals) and Tré Cool (drums), backed with few more musicians for the tour, and played the “99 revolutions”.
They are used to playing in front of much bigger audience (it is expected that at the “Emirates” stadium in London will be 70,000 people, and on the “Leading end Reads Festival” as many as 80,000) but as true professionals, they played as 100,000 souls were listening to them.
“Belgradeeeeeeeee! Let’s go crazy! We love you! Do you know your enemies Belgrade?,” Armstrong announced hit “Know your enemy”, during which he played guitar behind his back and on one leg.
Then he called a girl who stood in fan pit to join him at the stage. They sang the end of the song together, after which the brave fan rushed and jumped in the crowd. Fans gave the singer the flag of Serbia which he unrolled to the satisfaction of the mass, put it on his head and then in the back pocket of his jeans.
“Oh my God! I love you, thank you Belgrade, to let me hear you scream,” continued Armstrong. “This is our first concert in Serbia, we will be playing all night. Also, this is your show, it all depends on you, so let’s make this night unforgettable.”
Then the sound of their great hit “Boulevard of Dreams”, at first in acoustic version, and then the song got sped up and the audience fell into ecstasy.
Then Billie announced a surprise for the audience – they will play their entire album “Dookie” from 1994., which is not usual for them.
One more treat was the mix “Satisfaction/Hey Jude”. During the concert Billie changed nine guitars.
After almost two hours of energetic performance cam the encore. One of the songs that amazed the crowd was “American Idiot”. Five times Grammy winners, performed “Jesus of Suburbia” and “Brutal Love”, and after 135 minutes Billie Joe said goodbye to the audience with words:
“Thank you so much!”
They arrived from Trieste to Belgrade on Sunday about noon, as Serbian daily Blic reported. Next to the stage, seven more rooms were set including a gym in which the band warmed up for the concert.
The band was accompanied by 80 people who were taking care of the production, with 14 trucks of equipment and 7 buses.
They have settled in the Belgrade center, and on Sunday night they went out to dinner. It is interesting that they brought their own chefs, who prepare food for the entire crew.
The technique for the concert was connected via wireless signal so the band members could move without obstacles on the stage which was 44 m wide and 17 m high, and the sound system was the same one used by Jon Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses and Rodger Waters.
