Head of the personal data security group at the Council of Federation Ruslan Gattarov has embarked on a fundraising venture for a renowned whistleblower Edward Snowden.
A special bank account is to be set up for this purpose. Apart from the actual fundraising, a special Snowden-devoted site is going to be launched soon in Russia, called helpsnowden.ru. It will provide information about Edward’s life and how to help him. The domain name has been registered, while several IT-companies have already offered to develop and design the site for free and have started working on it, Voice of Russia reported.
All the money received, according to Gattarov, will allow Snowden to use it to settle in Russia, rent an apartment and buy clothes.
Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said that “Snowden will gratefully accept help from the Russian people, as well as people from other countries.”
“Edward is not a rich man, and his own funds won’t last long,” Kucherena added.
A member of the Public Chamber and a blogger Anton Korobkov-Zemlyansky is convinced Snowden would soon be able to stop collecting charity and get a job, as Pavel Durov, the creator and owner of Russia’s VK social network, has offered Snowden a job, and so would several other IT companies, Korobkov-Zemlyansky said.
