Radiation level in city struck by DU bombs in 1999 is 131.0 nSv/h


BELGRADE – The levels of gamma radiation in air are within normal and pose no threat to public health in Serbia, the Agency for Ionizing Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety of Serbia released on Monday.


According to the latest virtual map posted on the agency’s website on Sunday, the highest dose rates are measured in Vinca, home of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences (139.0 nSv/h), followed by Vranje (131.0 nSv/h), a city in western Serbia, which was struck by depleted uranium bombs in 1999.

The third-highest radiation levels were measured in Kosovska Mitrovica (125.0 nSv/h), followed by Novi Sad (122 nSv/h), and Zlatibor (115.0 nSv/h). In Belgrade, the dose rate is 85.0 nSv/h.

The readings in Serbia are below the legal limit, and the radiation is coming from cosmic rays and from radionuclides that occur naturally in all environmental samples, the release states.

The average radiation dose in Serbia is around 100 nSv/h, and only levels twice as high would be regarded as dangerous, the agency said.
