BELGRADE – It has been officially confirmed that the fire which engulfed the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in Manhattan during the Easter holidays was not started deliberately, Serbia’s Consul General in New York Mirjana Zivkovic told the national broadcaster RTS after talking with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday evening.
Zivkovic said that the a letter had been sent to the U.S. State Department via the Serbian Embassy in Washington, urging that the Consulate be given access to all results of the investigation.
“We expect this to happen as soon as the investigation is completed,” Zivkovic said.
“The most unlikely scenario is that candles caused the fire, as the service ended, believers left, and the church was then closed,” Serbian Patriarch Irinej told the Blic daily.
“As soon as a detailed report on the causes of the fire and consequences is done, we will start reconstruction works,” the Patriarch said.
