BELGRADE – Albania’s main opposition Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of illegally financing the election campaign of the US President Barack Obama in 2012 with 80,000 US dollars, in exchange for a photograph of them posing together.

Democrats filed the lawsuit to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, claiming that Rama, who was opposition leader in 2012, sent the funds by which he violated US and Albanian laws, and his goal was to attend the campaign event in San Francisco, reported AP.

Last week Bilal Shehu (48), US citizen of Albanian origin, in federal court in New Jersey, pleaded not guilty to intentionally delivery of foreign contributions and donations for the purpose of the Obama campaign.

Rama denied that he paid to attend the campaign event, but he admitted that met with Shehu at the event, according to the US agency.
