BELGRADE – Serbian painter Ljubomir Ljuba Popovic has died aged 82 after a long and difficult illness, Belgrade media reported on Friday.

Popovic was one of the most highly acclaimed contemporary Serbian painters both at home and internationally.

His surrealism, often brimming with erotic motifs, was the subject of the 1978 documentary film L’amour monstre de tous les temps by the Polish-French director Walerian Borowczyk.

Born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1934, Popovic completed his primary and secondary education in Valjevo, Serbia, and studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade.

Popovic became an external member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1991.

He had been living and working in Paris since 1963.
