BELGRADE – Serbian Patriarch Irinej awarded President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev with the Order of Saint Sava of the first grade in the Patriarchate in Belgrade on Wednesday, the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) announced.

A decision of the Holy Synod of Bishops, read out by the Bishop of Toplica Arsenije, pointed out that the highest order of the church is awarded to President Nazarbayev for his contribution to the establishment of genuine friendly relations between Kazakhstan and Serbia, the SPC website said.

The order is also awarded to Nazarbayev for his contribution to the development of economic and business relations with companies from Serbia and especially for the establishment of an equal treatment of religions in Kazakhstan, the church said.

The ceremony was attended by the Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.
