BELGRADE – If Serbia becomes a “blocked bottleneck” because countries further down the migrant route have closed their borders, it, too, will have to close its borders regardless of its beliefs, President Tomislav Nikolic said Monday.

Serbia is facing challenges in the migrant crisis and it is in intensive discussions about this with Brussels, Nikolic told reporters in the Palace of Serbia.

“We do not need qualify accommodation capacities for more than five to six thousand people because that would mean that someone has plans for those people to stay here for longer,” Nikolic said.

There have been only sporadic migrant-related incidents in Serbia, but the situation could worsen at some point, Nikolic noted.

“A quick reaction is needed in collaboration with the EU, and if Hungary has not angered it thus far, Serbia will definitely not,” Nikolic said.
