BELGRADE – Serbia will not be erecting barriers, but it will close its borders to migrants by deploying the military, President Tomislav Nikolic said Tuesday.
“We will not be putting up wire fences. We can prevent them without physically harming anyone. (PM Aleksandar) Vucic knows my views, I know his, and I think they are identical,” Nikolic told Kurir.
He said he had openly told officials in Brussels that Serbia was unable to endure the principle of a “funnel or an hourglass where there is nothing coming out at the other end.”
“That is an old opinion of mine, it is nothing new and it has not changed. We will prevent the migrants like the countries that have not erected barriers but still secured their borders. A few months ago I authorised the military to assist the police in securing the borders,” Nikolic said.
