BELGRADE – Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has decided to run for president again, Belgrade media report.
The decision was voiced at the celebration of Nikolic’s 65th birthday on February 15, Belgrade-based N1 TV channel said late on Wednesday.
No official confirmation of the Serbian media reports on Nikolic’s decision to run for second term has been given so far.
Leader of SPS Ivica Dacic marked last night that, if the news about Nikolic running as candidate is true, it is a shame that he joins the myriad of candidates that are against Aleksandar Vucic.
“I have repeatedly stressed that it is best for Serbia to preserve political stability through the candidacy of a man who enjoys the most popular support, it is undoubtedly Vucic,” said Dacic.
Dacic pointed that, if Nikolic really runs against Vucic, him personally and the entire Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Dragan Markovic Palma with United Serbia party, will support Aleksandar Vucic even stronger.
– The only logical and rational is for the candidate to be the one who will will, with or without Nikolic, no matter. And what will Nikolic do without Vucic, that is clear, nothing, he will only help those who are against Vucic. And with no success – concluded Dacic.
On Tuesday, Serbia’s Minister of Internal Affairs Nebojsa Stefanovic announced that the ruling Progressive Party planned to nominate Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic as its candidate for presidency in the upcoming elections.
The date of the Serbian presidential election has not been officially announced yet, but it could reportedly be held on April 9, 2017.
