Serbian long jumper Ivana Spanovic wins gold, sets national record

Serbian long jumper Ivana Spanovic has won a gold medal at the European Indoor Athletic Championship held in Belgrade March 3-5.

Spanovic’s result – seven meters and 24 centimeters – was her personal and Serbia’s new national record.

The jump was also the best result achieved indoors this season, and third best of all times – 13 centimeters short of the world record set in 1988.

Spanovic thanked her supporters “for being a part of history,” and said she was proud of her achievement, which she said made a mark not only on this year, but on her career.

The most successful team in the championship was Poland which took home 12 medals: seven gold, one silver and four bronze, Beta has reported.

“This competition is the most prestigious and important on our calendar after the European Championship,” European Athletic Federation head Svein Arne Hansen said at the opening, saying that it was “an honor to have it in Belgrade.”
