Bulgarian ultra-nationalist Ataka party, which favors annexing parts of Serbia inhabited by ethnic Bulgarians, is set to join the government for the first time.

Ataka is a part of a coalition dubbed United Patriots, described by AFP as “pro-Russian,” which has reached a coalition agreement with former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s “pro-European” GERB.

The United Patriots came third in the March elections, and according to the agency, “stoked anti-immigration sentiment while also railing against Muslims, Roma and gay people.”

“If we have not agreed on a government platform with these people, we would have had to go for new elections in several months and end up in the same situation,” Borisov said in parliament, surrounded by the United Patriots leaders.
