Serbia’s new law on electronic communications, that is currently being worked on, will envisage compulsory registration of all prepaid SIM card users.

This is according to Tatjana Andan, who heads the Electronic Communications Department in the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications.

Andan explained that security services are “particularly interested” in this provision – “due to the newly created international circumstances” – and that the ministry took that into account, and included the provision in the draft.

“The ministry introduced this legal provision – to register all existing and future prepaid users – so that security services can, when they need to, efficiently learn (the users’) identities,” she told the National Assembly’s Committee on Spatial Planing, Transport, Infrastructure, and Telecommunications.

While the new law is currently in government procedure, the area regulating interception of electronic communications and retention of data will be the subject of a separate law, Andan said.
