Heavy equipment is being used this Thursday to tear down the former US embassy in Belgrade, in the Serbian capital’s Sarajevska Street.
Media reports said earlier that this work began on June 22.
The former embassy complex in fact consists of several buildings, bordered by Kneza Milosa, Vojvode Milenka, and Sarajevska streets.
Israeli investors who bought the land said they would leave intact only the central building facing Kneza Milosa St, in order to preserve the busy street’s look and spirit.
“We think that in the near future, precisely this street will become one of the most important parts of Belgrade,” Nir Makdasi, CEO for Serbia of Yossi Avrahama and Almogim Holdings told the daily Blic earlier.
The two companies now own the land in question, while the US embassy is now located in the elite Dedinje neighborhood.
