Serbia said Saturday that six of its citizens had been arrested in Greece in the investigation of the beating death of a 22-year-old Texas man on the island of Zakynthos.

Serbia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said the detained Serbs were to appear before a judge.

The family of Bakari Henderson of Austin, Texas, identified him as the victim. His family said Henderson was in Greece working on a photo shoot to launch a clothing line. Bakari graduated from the University of Arizona in May with a business degree.

Greek police said the victim was beaten to death early Friday at a bar in Lagana. Officials haven’t released a possible motive for the attack.

Greek police said Friday that a 34-year-old Greek and a 32-year-old British man of Serbian origin had been arrested.

Eyewitness: They were defending girl, Serbs are not guilty

Eyewitness of the tragic event on the Greek island of Zakinthos clams that the cause of death is the fall of the young man and that Serbs are not culprits. Eyewitness S.G. in a statement given to B92 from Zakynthos said that the incident occurred when the American approached a girl in front of the bar, who then rejected him.

“About ten meters in front of the bar was a girl. As he passed he began flirting with her, to which she said to leave her alone. He grabbed her and cut somehow, maybe he had a ring or something. The girl began bleeding, which is why the group of Serbs approached him”, he said.

S.G., who otherwise works in the bar in front of which the tragedy happened, said that the American threw a bottle after that and cut one Serb over his face.

“They moved on him, caught him after 50 meters, hit him a couple of time, he fell accidentally. However he fell so strangely, that he hit his head and probably broke his neck and I believe that is the cause of death”, the eyewitness added.

He even said that the person who hit the American was no of Serbian origin, but that he was a Bosniak.

“He does not work here, he is here on vacation every year. The police took the footage from the Luch Bar and there is the evidence of who hit him. It happens a lot here, there are many tourists”, he added.

S.G. stressed that everything that happened was that “a man hit his head”.

“Serbs are not guilty at all. The one that hit him is not a Serb”, he added.
